Journal, 1613.

This journal is attributed to Fotherby and records a voyage of seven whaling ships, financed by the Muscovy Company, sailing from London to Spitzbergen, May-August 1613. There are detailed descriptions of the geography, wildlife and weather, and the capture and processing of whales and walrus. Events of the voyage are noted, and describe deer hunting, encounters with Spanish and Dutch ships, and the rescue of eleven stranded men. Twelve watercolors illustrate whaling activities and wildlife. An unbound, mutilated map of a portion of the coast of Spitzbergen is enclosed in the notebook.
